Stars
- Astronomy Research
Project
Welcome, Grade 6 Astronomers!
You should have already chosen a constellation from the list provided
by your science teacher. Now that you have begun your research and
started to gather information, you can look for some additional
resources here on the internet. As you find information, be sure to
keep track of your sources. Don't forget to consult your
Works-Cited/Bibliography Formats handout or click
here
for the online version. Please ask Ms. Tanguay or your teacher for
help as you look for information and sources.
This is a
pathfinder
which will help you find information both in the media center and on
the Internet. The following sources are guidelines and suggestions,
but you may well find even more than I've listed here.
Books
- For the scientific part of
your assignment, look for books in the media center under the call
number 520
or
523.
- To find the related myths,
look in 292
or
398.2.
For now, all books will be kept
on a reserve cart here in the library media center. Please, if you
find anything, be sure to add it to the cart so that others will be
able to use it as well. Because so many of you all need to use the
same books, we need to keep them here so that everyone can have
access to them.
Constellation
Sites
- The following
websites should prove to be useful to you as you look for
information on your constellations.
- Many of these
contain scientific information as well as the myth or story that
is behind the constellation.
-
- The
Constellations Web Page
- Here, you will find all
kinds of information relating to all 88 constellations. First,
the
Greek
myth for each
constellation is presented, followed by
lots of
data on many of the
stars themselves, such as their apparent magnitude, distance, and
so on.
You should also be
able to find a good
picture
of your constellation here.
- Beginners
Guide to the Constellations
- From the Peoria
Astronomical Society. Very readable scientific information and
diagrams.
-
- Dome
of the Sky: Constellation List
- An online planetarium shows you the stars
from different latitudes. You can see constellations and the names
of their stars with just a click. Also includes the corresponding
myth.
- Constellations
and their Stars
- Written by Chris Dolan, a
grad student working on his Ph.D. in Astronomy at U.
Wisconsin-Madison. A long list of constellations with
information about
the stars and a
summary of their
myths. There are
links to other relevant sites as well.

- Mythology
Sites
- Constellation
Mythology
- From the Legg Middle School
Planetarium in Michigan. Great new site including myths for all 88
constellations. Just right for 6th graders.
-
- Mythology
- Windows to the Universe
- "Links from this page will
take you to descriptions of the role of selected stars, star
patterns, and related gods and goddesses in various cultures.
Myths are available in beginner, intermediate, and advanced
versions, so everyone should be able to read and understand the
story behind the constellation."
